Grab your basket & join us for Halton's Fruit Tree Project!

Each year, truckloads of food in Halton go to waste as they are simply not harvested. This food could instead benefit local food banks and schools, and reduce our dependency on imported food. That’s why we started the Halton Fruit Tree Project!

This program needs 2 things: fruit trees and volunteers!

Throughout the growing season, small groups of pickers will go to a property and harvest the fruit. The harvest will be shared 3 ways: 1/3 to the property owner, 1/3 to local food bank, and 1/3 to the pickers.

It’s a win-win scenario for everyone! Property owners avoid rotten fruit in their yards, volunteers work together and all share in free fruit that is locally grown and fresh, particularly the food bank agencies. Trees can be apples or pears but also cherries, mulberries, nuts, etc. and the produce needs to be in 'edible' condition and preferably organic.

And if you attend one of our food canning workshops, you will be able to preserve and store fruit for the winter season!

Fruit harvesting is a great way to meet new people, give back to the community and of course, enjoy the “fruits” of your labour. High school students can earn their volunteer hours as well. All are welcome!
